Granada is an ode to the beauty; a strange but admirable feeling comes from there and we can enjoy it immediately. The aesthetic of the buildings goes very well with the perfume of the gardens, the freshness of the rivers, Darro and Genil, the flavour of the tapas that they serve in all bars and restaurants and the music of the parties.

Nasrid palace: inheritance of Al-Andalus
The walls of the Alhambra, declared Humanity Patrimony by Unesco in 1984, was at the height of the art in the elegance of the decorations of the different rooms of the nasrides palaces from the middle of the XIIId century until the end of the XVth. The halls of Abencerrajes, Leones, Comares, the patio of Machuca where the Partal gardens are an unforgettable place after a visit, they are really impressive: the gardens in which water flows continuously, and are flanked by ceramic banks that imitate the nature shapes, arches, cupolas. From here, we can perfectly see Granada; and behind all this machinerie the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Among all this you can also find the palace of the emperor Charles V, that he made built when he was going to the city, conquered by his grandparents, the Catholic Kings. So we had to destroy a part of the nasrid outbuildings. So, the palace of the emperor is one of the most admired works of the Renaissance in Spain.
Generalife: a rest between gardens
The floral art in a palace. It is under this concept that the palace of the Nasrid kings has been built, a work which has been extended over the years, until now. Sharing the space with the rest of the outbuildings of the Alhambra, on the hill from which we see all Granada, like a courtesan city inside the city, the Generalife is a nice green space. Among the most important spaces, we find the cypress patio, a date place, between the favourite of Noabdil (last Nasrid King) and a "abencarraje" knight; nice to see as well, the stairs of water, that leads us directly to the Sierra Nevada. A visit by the new gardens created in the 30's of the last century is as well essential.
Cathedral and royal chapel, where sleep the kings
The most important temple of Granada is the best work of Diego de Siloé, the big architect of the Renaissance in Andalousia. He was not the only one to work on the cathedral: Enrique de Egas also worked on it and Alonso Cano was the author of the main front. It is under the Catholic kings that all the artisans worked; they decided to create a mausoleum which will be the reflection, later on, of their important role in the occdental history. Finally, the biggest chapel of the temple, which had for objective to welcome his body, has been replaced by the real chapel in order to welcome it. This one, contrary to the cathedral, claearly of the Renaissance style, is the last church with the gothic style. The mausoleum of Isabel and Fernando, made of Carrara marble by the workshop of Alejandro Fancelli de Genoa. The tomb is separated from the rest of the church by a nice ironworks, made by Bartolomé de Jaen.
The Darro route, a walk close to the water
After the important town-planning intervention that endured the city when the Catholic kings army had came, this walk reflects the aesthetic of the Muslim city. If we follow the flow of the Darro, our walk, that starts by the Plaza Nueva, becomes tight until being converted into a narrow street between the Darro bed and the trees, that go down from the Alhambra and the streets that go up until the Albaicin and the Sacromonte. Walking in this street, among old historic houses as the one of the Bañuelo (old arab bars) or the one of the Castril (nowadays, archaeological museum) and others converted in nice hotels, terraces, bars and some gardens, it is a real pleasure, especially during springs days when teh air is pur. The sunsets here are impressive and compet with the ones of San Nicolas.
Monastery of the Cartuja, three centuries of architecture
After the cathedral, it is the most imposing religious building of Granada. A true architectonic miracle, sculptural and pictoral, originallay built (XV-XVIII centuries) in the suburbs of the city but that has been absobed by the unstoppable town-planning expansion; nowadays is fully integrated in the city. The main promoter was Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba, the big captain; it was like a thank you for the success of his campaigns. Of all the places, we recomand to visit of the church, of the sacristy, of the tabernacles for the decorative profusion very Baroque. The Cartuja comunity who was living there has been evicted in 1835 and 1842, because of a devastating fire that demolished the cloister and a part of the prior, even if all this has been rebuilt.
Tapas, culinary work
Have a walk to try local "tapas" is not a fortuitous custom in Granada. It is a way to live and understand gastronomy. So even if we find a lot of nice restaurants, in a city in which we eat and we have diner with three beers and tapas to accompany them. No need to order them, it is a habit of the bar to give them for free. The best places to enjoy them are in the down town (especially around the place Bib-Rambla, the Nueva place, the street of San Matias and the street of Navas), the Albaicin, where is nice to get carried by the charm of the tapas of andalousi origin with views on the Alhambra, the Realejo and finally in the bars of the bull place where we can prolong the night (until the aurora) having drinks with great music.
Sacromonte caves, refuge of the gypsy art
It looks incredible that in one of the most visited city in the world we still find a wren colony so populous. But it is like this, even if we have to say that a lot of caves of the Sacromonte stayed there as touristic advert and scene for Moorish celebrations, "zambras", a kind of complete show when the gypsy artists show their virtuosity in different flamenco palos. A gypsy population, the main comunity of this hill, offers as well other kind of publicity in order for the visitors to climb the Sacromonte hills. One of them has the purpose to recreate a gypsy wedding, and the visitor participate as one more guest to the party, that let us understand a lot of special cultural features (to book call the 958 536 483). And to understand the way of life in the caves, a visit to the Sacromonte Caves Museum is nice.
Sciences park, butterfly and technologies of the future
This multidisciplinary space is simpler than a didactic museum, and it is the main bet of the city to offer to the inhabitants of Granada and visitors a little bit of modernity. A total of 30'000 meters square dedicated to make know the main discoveries of the science and of the humanity technological progress. Among the nicest places we can find the Mariposario, a nice garden where they created the moth habitat from all continents; the Planetarium, whose the half spherical screen shows films that permit a conenction between the structure and the mythology of the universe, or the Explora room, where the children (from 3 to 7 years) have the opportunity to play and to get closer to the technology, like for example interactive robots. Here, we can also find one of the most beautiful tower to take pictures of Granada, with the Sierra Nevada in the background: the Mirador tower that reaches 50 meters high.
San Vicente plain, tribute to Federico Garcia Lorca
It was the plain chosen by Garcia Lorca's family to escape the summertime. With this orchard, Granada pays tribute to his favourite son, Federico. It is here (another strong point of Granada)that is the little house where the great poet and writer wrote some of his masterpieces (like Yerma or Bodas de Sangre), and where he lived sad days in summer 1936, before his detention and his murder. In the house- museum, bought by the council of the city and opened to the public since 1995, we recreated the differents rooms with the help of pictures taken when Garcia Lorca family was living here (1926- 1936). A big part of the furnitures, personal things and documents exhibited have been given by the family of the poet. House- museum Federico Garcia Lorca.
