The mantoncillo is a small triangular or square shawl decorated with embroidery, prints or plumeti fabric, and finished with fringes or pointed tips. It is the smaller version of the Manila shawl: while a full mantón measures about 140 cm per side, the mantoncillo does not exceed 80 cm. It is worn over the shoulders as an accessory to the flamenco dress at ferias, pilgrimages and performances, and is the most commonly used shoulder piece in flamenco fashion.
Mantoncillos are classified by finish and material. Embroidered models feature floral motifs hand- or machine-stitched onto plain fabric. Printed and polka-dot mantoncillos have bold, colourful designs. Plain and plumeti styles are more understated, with a subtle raised texture. Embroidered picos (pointed shawls) are triangular with a decorated central vertex. Prices range from €7 for basic models to €150 for hand-embroidered pieces, with most falling between €9 and €35.
