Flamenco Castanets

The castanets (also called clappers) are a percussion instrument made up of two concave pieces of wood, fiberglass, or fabric, connected by a cord. They are played by holding them with the thumbs and striking them with the fingers, producing a dry and rhythmic sound that accompanies flamenco dancing, the jota, and other Spanish dances.

Professional castanets are made from granadilla wood (the most valued for its warm sound and projection) or fiberglass (more durable and with a brighter sound). For beginners, fabric or beginner castanets offer an economical option to learn the basic technique. Sizes range from 2 (children) to 10 (large hands), with sizes 6-7 being the most common for adult women and 8-9 for men.

In our store, you will find 129 models of castanets from brands like Del Sur, Jale, and Castañuelas del Sur, with prices starting from €12 for beginner models up to professional concert castanets. We offer personalized engraving and shipping worldwide.

Guía: Cómo elegir tus castañuelas

Wood or fibreglass?

Traditionally, castanets were carved from fine hardwoods such as ebony, guayacán or granadillo. Today, fibreglass has become the preferred material for many players: it withstands temperature and humidity changes better, is lighter, and produces a powerful, bright sound ideal for soloists and professionals. Granadillo wood remains the top choice for those who prefer a warm, traditional tone. For beginners, fabric castanets offer the most affordable option.

Which castanets should a beginner buy?

If you are just starting out, you can choose beginner castanets from €12 to learn the basic technique without a big investment. If you know you will continue, it is worth investing in a mid-range fibreglass pair (from €35) — the difference in sound and comfort is significant and they will last for years of practice.

How do I find my castanet size?

Sizing depends on the width of your palm. As a general guide: sizes 2–4 for children, sizes 5–7 for adult women (size 6 is the most popular), and sizes 8–10 for men. Each manufacturer may vary slightly, so we recommend checking the specific size chart for each brand. If in doubt, contact us and we will help you choose.

With or without a peak?

The peak (the decorative point at the top of the castanet) is purely aesthetic and does not affect the sound. Choose according to your personal taste: castanets with a peak have a more traditional look, while smooth ones look more modern.

Essential accessories

To protect your castanets we recommend a padded carrying case (prevents scratches and knocks) and mutes/silencers that allow you to practise at home without disturbing others.

Featured brands

We work with Spain's leading castanet makers: Castañuelas del Sur (professional and concert range, handcrafted), Jale (excellent value for money) and Del Sur. Each brand has its own sound characteristics and sizing.
