The Alpujarra, vestiges of an arabic past
This mountain area, formed by a total of 48 towns is one place with a great personnality and easy to recognise around Andalusia. Furthermore, this area was a sanctuary for the Moorish when they left Granada after the storming of the city, in 1491, Boabdil was in charge. A large part of his descendant remained here until their deportation, at the middle of the XVI. Century, and we can see that in the buildings, the gastronomy, and also in the festal traditions of the area, with clear features of the Muslim past. From the sides of Sierra Nevada up to the Mediterranean and the Lecrin valley to the Gador sierra and the delta of the Andarax river, we find, excluding a very rich ecosystem, beautiful towns such as Lanjaron and the spring that supplies thousand of homes accorss the country; Orgiva, main population knot of the High Alpujarra, with a castle-palace that belonged to a family descendent of the Great Captain, who received the town in heritage by the Catholic Kings. Pampaneira, with a Berber appearance and declared Historical and Artistical Group, such as Capilaira i Bubiob; Trevelez, one of the highest village of Spain and seat of an important business of ham, treated with the very cold winds coming from the sierra; Cadiar, also with tracks if its Berber past; Alcutar and Berchules, where we find the cave where ibn Aboo found refuge; the Mecinas; Valor, village of Fernando de Cordova; Ugijar, access door to the Aloujarra where we can see the house builded during the XVI. and XVII. Century.
Sierra Nevada, centre for the skiers
Even with a year late, Sierra Nevada received the World Ski Championship in 1996. A great demonstration to show the value of this place for the winter sports. Altogether, 90 kilometers of skiable domaine, distributed in six areas. The epicentre of all this white whirl is in Pradollano, where we find a great offer of hotels, apartments, restaurants, shops and other leisure for the snowboot. But, except the winter sports, Sierra Nevada is a natural area protected under the national parc class, where we find the two main peaks of the Iberian peninsula. This area shelters a large biodiversity: more than 2'000 vegetable plants. Among the most important faun we can mention the wild goat, the owner of the park rocks, as well as the bird of prey and a high quantity of insect species. Information office of the park; www.juntadeandalucia.es/medioambiente.
Fuentecaqueros and Alfacar, Lorca's life
A route in Granada on the poet's and playwright's steps, Federico Garcia Lorca, we have to start in the city of Granada. Concretely in the San Vicente Huerta, place where the brilliant writer spent his holidays with his family during 10 years. The small house where he spent the summer is still there with a large part of his goods. Not far from here, 20 kilometers away from the capital city, we find Fuentevaqueros, where we can visit the house-museum of the poet, a rural and humble house where we keep for example the bed where Federico was born. Next step will be the small village of Alfacar. There we find the sadly notorious ravine of Viznar, where Federico has been shooted and buried nearby hundred of victims of the Civil War, as remembers the stoned monolith. The route ends in Valderrubio, 30 kilometers far away from the Nasrid capital. When Federico Garcia Lorca was 7 years old the Garcia Lorca family reached this locality. Here he spent a part of his childhood and here he's got the inspiration to write work pieces such as the Casa de Bernarda Alba or Yerma.
Santa Fe, the first steps of Colon
Set in the heart of the valley of the river Genil, Santa Fe was born like the consequene of the last chapter of the Reconquest. Actually before that the Catholic Kings installed the camp here for its army, during the siege in Granada, here were only trucker plains taking advantage in the fertility of the grounds. This rural vocation persists today, even with the imminence of the city. This is specificly here that Isabel de Castille received Christopher Columbus and gave her approval to the transoceanic adventure of Columbus. After the capitulation of Boabdil, signed here in 1491, in the Royal House, and after the monarches left, Santa Fe began to grow like a latin cross with the building of its monumental doors, the church of the Incarnation, and another one Señor de la Salud or the convent of the Agustinos and its characteristic baroque stage and fronts, among others buildings.
Almuñecar: sand, sun and beach
In spite of the excessive growth of the town-planning associated to the beach tourism, Almuñecar keeps a part of its historical old town. A nice pincushion of small streets with white houses and deorated with multicolour flowers pots. Its principal origin is clearly Muslim, because Abderraman I landed here during the VIII. Century. The Muslims have set here a defensive kasbah from which we can admire the castle, headquarters of a small archeological museum. But for most of the people choosing this locality to spend their holidays the beaches are the reason of their choice: 26, a total of 19 kilometers of fine sand and warm water. The climate is mild and that is wahy we call this region the Tropical Coast. Thanks to its clement climate the farming of tropical fruit is prospering: the custard apples of Almuñecar have their own name and we can also find cultivation of avocados, mangos and papayas for example...
Motril, exoticism on the Tropical Coast
Like its neighbours Almuñecar and Salobreña, and even if its town-planning heart is not far from the sea, Motril is forming a part of the Tropical Coast, and that points to its purpose for the toursim of sun and beach, but also for the night life, this city is a perfect place to party. But you will also find the farming of exotic products. This is also the perfect place for shopping: most of the shops are around the rambla of Capuchinos. According to the monumental values, the most recommended building is the sanctuary of the Virgin de la Cabeza, a very important place because the mother of Boabdil, Fatima, was living here before the storming of Granada. On the Spain square the monumental overview is completed by the town council and the Encarnation church.
Loja, history of a defense
From the distance of the huge plain formed by the Genil valley is easy to understand the reason of the existence of Loja: a kasbah that has grown without the defensive needs of the kingdom of Granada. Actually this locality preserves a good part of the complicated town planning of the Muslim period. Among all the buidings, we notice the Genil bridge, symbol of the city. We keep the defenses of the Ochavada tower, the Homage tower and the Water and Basurto tower. But we can also admrie marvellous examples of the religious structure, posterior to the conquest, such as the church of the Incarnation, the church of Saint Catalina and Saint Garbiel, besides the convents of San Francsico de Asis and Saint Clara.
Huetor, core of the botanical species
The environmental wealth of Granada is not limited to the Sierra Nevada. Actually, in the foothills of this huge natural space we find the park of Huetor, with an extension of more than 12'000 hectares and with a great biodiversity. For example, to know the botanical magnificence of the park we recommend to walk through the arboretum, where are living together Mediterranean species and from the center of Europe or even from the north of Africa. Among all these species we can spot the abundance of pine forest and an interesting fir trees copse. About the animal species we can talk about cats and wild goats, stone martens, wild boars, royal eagle and imperial eagle, royal owl, sparrowhawk, and different species pf small lizards, vipers, grass snakes... Such a richness only 10 kilometers from Granada. Center for visitors: Carretera Viznar-Puerto Lobo, km 43; Víznar. 958 540 426.
Guadix and Baza, thousand year old village
The motorway A-92, direction to Almeria, will take us to these two localities of Granada. And in spite of its important monumental patrimony, something surprises us in Guadix: the place where Guadix is, in the middle of the valley and with geological formations very characteristic: here we found some tracks of human beings dating from thousand years ago. Actually we think that Guadix is one of the nucleus of the oldest population of the country. Today this is an Episcopal headquarter. The origins of Baza are also very distant, founded by the "basetanos", an Iberian village. We have discovered a lot there and we are now exhibiting the discoveries at the local museum. Among the large buildings of Baza you have to see the Arab baths from the XIII. Century when the locality was producing silk and saffron.
Alhama of Granada, kingdom of spas
In Arab an alhama (al-hammam) is a place for the bath, and that point shows an important part of the meaning of this place: its great richness are the thermal waters, flowing near the river; the Romans and Muslims used them during centuries. Actually, the monarchs builded here a castle for their holidays, and rebuilded at the beginning of the XX. Century. Today it is a spa and keeping intact the bathroom, erected during the XII. Century on the anterior. We keep also tracks of the Muslim era in the Arab district and thanks to the characteristic town planning.
