Borrico de Jerez

Borrico de Jerez

Gregorio Manuel Fernández Vargas was born Jerez de la Frontera in 1910 and died in this same city in 1983. His gypsy family comes from the mythical singer of ‘seguiriyero´ style Paco la Luz, as his father was El Tati and formed part of the saga of the legendary María Borrico and Juanichi el Manijero. This explains his quick formation as a singer, based on a ‘afillá´ - grave and rough- voice. However, Tío Gregorio was not recognised until he was older, when he started to participated in some festivals. His increase in popularity coincides with that of other artists of his style, such as Juan Talega. He suffered a lengthy illness which submerged him in economic ruin and provoked his death, passing on his talent to his daughter, María la Burra. Who has an interesting collection of albums.
