Two artistic nicknames, distinguished between a diminutive, that dazzle the Spanish dance world during the first part of the 20. Century. One of the nicknames, La Argentinita, belongs to a passionate and scandalous woman, with a lively fame. The other surname, La Argentina, is less known today, but belongs to the most acute Spanish dancer of her time. The most modern and sophisticated dancer. Antonia Mercé took the flamenco dance out of the tablaos to the international stages, giving to this dance graceful attributes but always based on the ancestral roots.
On the other side, La Argentina had a perpetual musical and scenic interaction with avant-garde figures (Falla, García Lorca, Granados, Néstor de la Torre, Joaquín Nin…) and with mythical dancers like Vicente Escudero. She was a very important artist in the Spanish culture. When she died (July 18. 1936) the international newspapers compared her to the Pavlova of the flamenco.
