Max Herzog started playing drums and guitar in various bands during his younger years. When he came to see a performance of one of Germany 's most outstanding flamenco-guitarists, Jan Hengmith, he soon became captivated by the drive and depth of the flamenco-guitar, and he eventually took intensive guitarlessons from Hengmith for several years.

After experimenting with jazz, rock and latin-music as a student of the Institute of the Arts in Arnhem , The Netherlands, Herzog decided to accomplish his studies of the flamenco guitar at the Conservatory of Rotterdam, under the supervision of Paco Peña. In 2006, he graduated from the institution with a Bachelor of Music.

Herzog has also been taught by Paco Serrano, Miguel Angel Cortés (Christina-Heeren-Foundation For Flamenco-Art, Sevilla) and has attended masterclasses by Manolo Franco and Juan Manuel Cañizares.

In 2004 he played at the Dunya Festival in Rotterdam and accompanied various renowned artists at workshops and concerts throughout The Netherlands and abroad. Artists with whom he has performed include Belén Fernandez, Angel Muñoz, José Parrondo, David Pino and Paco Serrano.
