The Spanish fan (abanico) is a folding instrument made of sticks (wood, plastic or mother-of-pearl) joined at one end and covered with decorated fabric or paper. It opens into a semicircle and is used for cooling, but in Spain it holds a cultural significance that goes far beyond: it is an essential accessory of the flamenco dress, an expressive element in flamenco dance, and a fashion complement with centuries of history. The Spanish hand fan is considered one of the most refined in the world.
Fans are classified by material and use. Wooden fans (pear, sycamore, sandalwood) are the most traditional and can be plain, latticed or hand-painted. Flamenco dance fans (pericones) are larger (up to 90 cm when open) and reinforced for stage use. Prices range from €2 for basic models to over €100 for artisan hand-painted fans. Large decorative wall fans are also available.
At FlamencoExport we offer 370 fan models: flamenco dance fans, traditional Spanish wooden and fabric fans, mother-of-pearl fans, decorative fans, personalised fans for weddings and events, and large pericón fans. All shipped directly from Spain.
