The Spanish mantilla is a lace veil that covers the head and shoulders, held in place by a decorative comb (peineta). It is one of the most recognisable garments of Spanish tradition, associated with Holy Week, weddings, christenings and formal occasions. Its origins date back to the 17th century, and it has been a symbol of elegance and devotion for centuries. The mantilla is worn over styled hair, held by a tortoiseshell or similar comb, and falls to a point down the back.
Mantillas are classified by shape and size. Triangular mantillas are the most common for Holy Week and religious ceremonies, available in standard and reduced sizes. Rectangular mantillas (120×250 cm and 250×300 cm) offer more draping options and are preferred by godmothers. Materials are always bobbin lace or embroidered tulle, in black (Holy Week), ivory (weddings) or white (communions). Prices range from €28 for basic mantillas to over €800 for handmade Spanish lace pieces.
