Las Ramblas, the bustlingest boulevard in the world
An experience for all the senses. Walking on the central part of the Ramblas, only one avenue with five different names, going all over the big kilometer that goes from Cataluña place until Colon, is "living Barcelona", being present in a show soaking up of the spirit of the city. Las Ramblas never desappoint and going up and down create an addiction. This walkway is much more than a public way, it is a space to spend the day. A meeting point where in which we can see the last trends regarding the street shows, we can buy the first newspapers of the day, you can lunch, snack or have dinner, you can smell the flowers, get lost in the Boquería, to go into the "Royal place" and even to go to the Opera. Las Ramblas are always bustling, never borring.
Santa Maria del Mar, cathedral close to the sea
The cathedral is situated in the middle of the Ribera, very famous for the million of copies of the novel of Ildefonso Falcones is one of the most beautiful example of the catalan gothic. Built on th XIV century, this nice building belonged to parishioners of the port area and of the Ribera because they financed the construction expenses and they paid the workers. The loaders of the quay, called "bastaixos", loaded onto their back big stones from the Montjuic quarry until the Born Place, loading them on their back. It is not rare to see on the door of the church a tribute paid to these men. The building, of three naves without transept crossing, give the feeling that it is a special and unic place. It dazzles the visitor from inside, so forbidding, so clean, being one of the rare churches which can be admired without any added ornament. Don't hesitate to go to some of the concerts.
Museo Picasso, packaging and content
Five medieval palaces with big bows, impressive front steps and nice patio welcome to the visitors. The Picasso Museum is one of the most visited of Barcelona and to get the access to go inside take some time, but the wait is really worth. The museum, opened in 1963 thanks to the artist and his friend Jaume Sabartés, counts on 3800 works, and has been transformed into a centre of reference for the knowledge of years of formation of Pablo Ruiz Picasso. The strong link that the artist had with the city in which is came with all his family in 1895, at 14 years, and in which he lived until he goes to Paris, in 1904. There are the most important creations of his student time, like "Ciencia y Claridad"; the works of this "blue time" as Azoteas of Barcelona or "Blanquita Suarez"; paintings as important as "aunt Pepa portrait" or the one of his father, and the complete serie of "Las Meninas de Velazquez". A unique museum www.museupicasso.bcn.es.
Casa Mila, for friends, La Pedrera
Pere Mila and Roser Segimon got married in 1905 and gave the responsability to Antonio Gaudi, the fashion architect, who finished the Casa Batlló, to build a building of appartments which leave the neighbours of the corner of the Paseo de Gracia with Provenza open-mouthed. Cheerful, Gaudi didn't spare any effort about the expenses and carried out an abstract sculpture with organic gray stone shapes (the name of Pedrera comes from there), twisted iron and chimnies with warrior shapes with helmet. The Casa Milà was built in 1912 and started the vicissitude history. Nowadays, this nice and strange building is considered as one of the most important works of the catalan architect, where he could express his idea of the total art. The visit of the terrace with the cheminies is necessary, and we can see the antique appartment furnished with the middle class family taste of the beginning of the century, a very dificult space to decorate regarding the abundance of curves and the absence of straight lines.
Park Güell, the fantasy in a park
Two houses inspired of Hansel and Gretel tale advise the visitor that he comes into a fantasy world, a dream imagined by the businessman and patron Eusebio Guell and the artist Antonio Gaudi. His idea was to create an english style city- garden for the well- off. The project was a failure because, the middle class considered this area (the north of Gracia area) was very far from the down town and it has been given up in 1914, but Gaudi had already put his first and big grain of sand building a big front steps guarded by a big salamander, and the one hundred columns room, a kind of forest they wanted to use to install the market of the garden suburb. We see a big place of 3000 metres square with the famous trencadis bench. Regarding the houses, just two have been built, one of them is the Gaudi Museum, www.casamuesogaudi.org, place of residence of the architect from 1906 to 1925.
The Sagrada Familia, the tourism temple
With more than two millions visitores a year, the Sagrada Familia is one of the best touristy advertisingof the city and is considerated the maximum axhibitor of the Catalonian modernism. Antonio Gaudi got this order in 1883 and ever since then this porject became his obsession til he died in 1926, when he was finishing the crypt, the apse wallsm one façade and a tower. His idea was to erect a temple big enough to accomodate 13'000 faithful, with 18 towers inspired by the Montserrat mountains chimneys, and that will represent the 12 apostles, the four Gospels, the Virgin Mary and at the top Jesus Christ. His project was to build a stone Bible. Today they are working on the Glory façade. And near the temple are the Provisional Schools of the Sagrada Familia, designed for the children of the workers, www.sagradafamilia.org.
The Gothic area, get lost in the history
The Gothic area is the one situated at the east of the Ramblas. There is a lot to see, a long walk accross the old Barcelona, where are living together remains of the Romane and the Middle-Age. Here is the jump-start. The best to do is get lost in the small streets and discover the small squares, such as the Pi and the one of Felipe Neri, with a lot of charm. Don't forget to visit the impressive Gothic cathedral (www.catedralbcn.org), its square is always very lively; also very commendable a walk through the Rey square, where you'll find the City Museum, a ver nice small medieval palace. You can stop in the Marés Museum patio, www.museumares.bcn.es, and to finish have a look at the San Jaime square, protected by the town hall and the Generalitat of Catalonia, the key point of the city.
Montjuïc, a space for art
This small mountain is the sentinel of the harbour and the city, and has a lot to offer. Here you'll find some artistical centers, some of them are the most important of the city; the National Art Museum of Catalonia, with an impressive collection of Roman frescos, and the Miro Foundation, an elegant and luminous building designed by Lluis Sert to host some works of Joan Miro. Another jewel for the architecture lovers is the Pavillon Mies van del Rohe, constructed for the Universal Exposition of 1929. And the last incorporation is the CaixaForum, set up in an old modernist factory.
The Raval, the mestizo district
The Raval has been the mischievous district of town during centuries, a prohibited area for many people and a diversion place for others. Since more than a decade, the Raval lived a huge transformation and is now one of the prefered area of the youth to go out. Have a walk throug the Raval, it's a different way to discover the world. Here a large immigrants community is living together, coming from Magreb or Pakistan and working in restaurants and groceries, there also are a lot of faculties in the area and a lot of students. The cultural offer is pretty big, as well as the Catalonian Library you will see the Macba, The Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona, www.macba.es, and nearby the old house of the charity of the XVIII. century.
The Barceloneta, the sea as a backdrop
We cannot visit Barcelona without taking advantage of the sea, the beaches and the hustle and bustle of its small bars, in Summer but also in Winter, you also have to see the Port Vell and the Marmagnum area, a mole surrounded by the sea. But without any doubt, the coastal jewel is a mix between the coastal Barcelona and the old Barcelona, this is the Barceloneta until the Olympical Harbour. You eill see a part of the new Barcelona.
