Aida Gomez
Aida Gomez
Exclusive flamenco dancer
Aída Gómez was born in Madrid in 1967. She grew up in the Spanish capital, one of two children in a working-class family. Gómez started to dance at an early age, learning flamenco techniques at the age of seven and classical ballet four years later. Her mother encouraged and supported her, thinking that she’d get tired of dancing, but that never happened. Aída Gómez joined the Spanish National Ballet in 1981. During her first season she became a soloist. Four years later she became a prima ballerina, and stayed with the company for 10 years. In 1996 she joined flamenco dance legend Joaquín Cortes as a guest star and in 1997 she moved to Lausanne to teach Spanish dance at Maurice Bejart’s school.
While teaching in Switzerland, she decided to create her own dance company to showcase both soloists and the ensemble. Shortly after that she got a call from the Spanish minister of culture who asked her to return to Spain as artistic director of the Spanish National Ballet. She accepted and soon revamped the repertoire and the dancers.
A series of labor disagreements and personality conflicts with some of the dancers escalated to a point where it became a national controversy in the Spanish media. These troubles led to her dismissal if February of 2001.
