What is a rociero skirt and how does it differ from a flamenco skirt?
The rociero skirt (also called campero skirt) is a long, wide skirt designed for outdoor life: walking along dirt paths, horse riding, spending hours in the sun. Unlike the flamenco dance skirt, which is tight at the hip with ruffles for movement, the rociero skirt is looser, sturdier and easier to wear for hours.
The main differences:
- Cut: the rociero skirt is wide from the waist; the flamenco skirt is fitted at the hip and flares at the knee
- Length: the rociero reaches the ankle or just above; the flamenco skirt is usually longer, with a train
- Fabric: the rociero uses cotton, linen or poplin (tough and cool); the flamenco skirt uses fabrics with more drape and shine
- Purpose: one is for walking through the countryside; the other, for dancing at the fair
Types of rociero skirts: which one to choose?
Classic campero skirt
The campero skirt is the most traditional option for El Rocío. Straight or slightly flared cut, ankle-length, with a high waistband. It is worn with a white blouse, waistcoat and hat. The classic colours are black, brown, beige and stripes. It is the most versatile skirt: suitable for the trail, the village and the brotherhood ceremonies.

Amazona skirt
The amazona skirt is a more elegant variant of the campero skirt, inspired by horse riding. It is worn with the amazona jacket (a short, fitted jacket, often with embroidery). It is the most classic and flattering rociero look. Ideal if you are going on horseback or if you want an outfit with more presence for events in the village.

Lightweight and ruffled skirts for the trail
If you are looking for something cooler, more colourful and more affordable, ruffled skirts are an increasingly popular alternative at El Rocío. They are not the traditional campero skirts, but they are comfortable, cheerful and perfect for hot days on the trail. They come in two-ruffle (simpler) and four-ruffle (more flamenco) styles. Colours like coral, fuchsia, lime green or floral prints are the most sought-after.

Which fabric to choose for your journey
Walking for three days is not the same as driving to the village for the weekend. The fabric of the skirt makes all the difference:
- Cotton and poplin: the most practical. They breathe, wash easily and withstand the dust of the trail. Ideal if you are walking or riding. Ruffled skirts are usually made from these fabrics
- Linen: more elegant, with great drape. Perfect for events in the village or more urban pilgrimages. It wrinkles quite a lot, but that is part of its charm
- Cotton-polyester blend: the toughest campero skirts usually use this blend. They do not wrinkle, last a long time and are easy to maintain
Tip: if you are doing the long trail (several days walking or on horseback), take two skirts: a tough campero for the trail and a smarter one for arriving at the village.
The complete rociero look: from head to toe
The skirt is the centrepiece, but the rociero look is completed with the rest of the clothing and accessories. Here is the classic combination:
Top: blouse and waistcoat
The most traditional combination is a white blouse (with ruffles, lace or embroidery) and a short waistcoat. Checked or campero-stripe blouses are also worn for a more casual look. For the trail, long sleeves protect from the sun; for the village, short sleeves or straps are cooler.
Footwear: campero boots
The quintessential footwear for El Rocío is the campero boot. Those from Valverde del Camino are the most traditional: quality leather, tough soles and a comfortable last for hours of walking. If you are going along dirt tracks, do not wear sandals or espadrilles: you will regret it.

Hat
At El Rocío, the hat is not an accessory: it is a necessity. The sun in the marshlands is relentless. The most common are the Córdoba hat (the classic flat-brimmed one) and the wide-brimmed hat, which provides more shade. Choose a comfortable one you can wear all day.
Accessories
Rociero accessories are more understated than flamenco fair accessories:
- Flowers: a flower in the hair adds a splash of colour without complicating the look. Small natural or fabric flowers are the most rociero
- Small shawl: over the shoulders for the morning or evening, when it gets cool in the countryside
- Rociero belt: leather belts with a buckle are the finishing touch that completes the campero skirt
- Fan: in May in southern Spain it is hot. Essential

How much does a rociero skirt cost?
The price range for rociero skirts varies considerably depending on the type:
- Ruffled skirts for the trail: from €49.50 to €80. The most affordable and the most cheerful in colour
- Campero skirts: between €85 and €100. More sober, tougher, more traditional
- Amazona skirts: around €95. The most elegant cut to pair with an amazona jacket
- Complete outfits (amazona jacket + skirt): from €158 for off-the-rack styles and up to €680 for handcrafted suits with embroidery
If you are looking for affordable rociero skirts, the two-ruffle skirts are the best value without sacrificing rociero style. From €49.50 you have a skirt ready for the trail.
Practical tips for El Rocío pilgrimage
- Bring a change of clothes: the trail means dust, mud (if it rains), sweat and sun. Having a clean skirt for arriving at the village makes all the difference
- Boots, not sandals: the trail terrain is uneven. Campero boots from Valverde del Camino are made exactly for this
- Sun protection: hat always, and wide-brimmed is even better. The May sun in the marshlands is unforgiving
- Layers for the evening: evenings in the countryside get quite cool. A small shawl solves the night chill with style
- Light colours for the day: white, beige and pastel tones reflect the sun and keep you cooler. Save dark colours for the evening or events in the village
- The skirt-trousers: if you are going on horseback, the campero skirt-trousers are the solution: the look of a skirt, the comfort of trousers
