A first rapprochement to Madrid we take us to its famous art galleries; but the city is more than that and wants to show us its night facet in the mythical Gran Via, its impeccable parks and gardens like El Retiro or the Botanical, its traditional taverns in the Mayor square area or the odd objects that you will find in El Rastro.

The Prado Museum: a changed classic
The painting collection of the Prado contains works of Spanish, Italian and Flamenco artists.
We are talking about one of the most important collections of the world.
Rafael Moneo made the expansion of this renewed Prado; futhermore the Prado has now a central hall decorated with bronze, with warm walking areas. The doors of Cristina Iglesias suggest big wooden parts, and the Jerónimos Cloister with its statue of Leonis are other news.
The Prado also has a great bookstore. But are very interested by its new acquisition: the drawing "El Toro mariposa" (the butterfly bull) by Goya, a work that point out the surrealism roots.

The Retiro Park: walks and culture outdoors
The Retiro is a park with 118 ha, with its railings, its pond and its small boats, its rose garden, its 60'000 trees and its stands selling barley water, french fries and drinks.
The park also has a place bound to night leisure: the legendary hall Florida Park (paseo de la República de Panamá, 1. www.floridapark.net), that we can rent for private parties but also offers dinner-shows using its flamenco tablao.
The Retiro opened its doors in 1632 like a playtime area, in this time we had a boat ride and we made the marriage proposal.
Now we can also visit some expositions of the Reina Sofia in the Cristal palace and in the Velazquez palace.
In June the Book Feria of Madrid settles int he paseo de los Coches.
Furthermore, the Retiro is the unique park of the world having a sculpture of the devil or Fallen Angel.
Oriente Square: splendor and gardens with tradition
The centre of Madrid of the XVIII.
Century is situated here, in this gardened path and its name is due to its location: Eastern of Magerit (the old name of Madrid). In the middle we have an equestrian statue of the King Felipe IV, a very majestic statue.
In one of the extremes of the square we have the Royal Palace, one of the most important buildings of Madrid in XVIII.Century. in the other extreme we have the Royal Theater, the temple of opera and ballet.
Even if we have the feeling that the time stops while we are having a coffee at the traditional Café de Oriente or when we are walking around the statues of the kings of Leon, Aragon and Castille, there are some news around the area: The Buena Vista (Vergara, 10. 12.00-24.00) a library-café.
And in the Santiago street you have to taste the neospanish cooking of the Taberneros or buiy a little Martian gift in Celuloide.
Reina Sofia Museum: contemporary inside and outside
Plaza Mayor: authentic entertainment at any time
The plaza Mayor is the neuralgic place of the old Madrid.
Today we use this square to celebrate traditional public holidays and Christmas markets.
The paintings of Guillermo Perez-Villalta give some colour to the wall of the Casa de la Panaderia (the house of the bakery), old headquarters of this body.
You will also find some traditional shops such as the house of espadrilles Casa Hernanz (Toledo, 18), the paradise of the Spartan shoes.
And if you think that having a drink in one of the plaza Mayor terraces is a madness regarding the touristy prices, try the Madroño cake shop (Latoneros, 10), mixing tradition and culinary experience: we can taste the "madroño" cakes (strawberry trees)... if you want to be 100% traditional stay at the Posada del Peine, opened in 1610, but recently reformed in a 4 stars hotel.
Santiago Bernabéu Stadium: the palace of the white team
It is hard to by-pass the charismatic Bernabaeu, above all because it is in the middle of the Paso de la Castellana, one of the inevitable ways of the city.
Besides the football and concerts schedules, the Realcafé Bernabeu is open (paseo de la Castellana, near the Lima square.
Door 30), a restaurant with unobstructed views of the stadium; you will also have the possibility to buy some gifts in the Real Madrid shop.
But the star of the stadium is its complete visit that includes a transit through the honour box, the changing rooms and the players tunnel (everyday, from 10.00-19.00; Door 7; adults 15 euros, children 10).
For the art lovers, there is an interesting place: the Azca hall, near the Mapfre Foundation and its exhibitions (General Perón, 40. Monday, 14.00-21.00. Tuesday-Saturday, 10.00-21.00; public holidays, 12.00-21.00).
Thyssen-Bornemizsa Museum: a mosaic of international art
The most recent of the classical museums in Madrid: the Thyssen, it seems to be there, on the paseo del Preado for more than one century but it is only there since 1992. We feel the interest of Carmen Thyssen to Gauguin in one of the painting halls dedicated to the French artist.
But the museum offers more than that: at least a temporary exhibition and two permanant collections.
The collection of the baroness Thyssen-Bornemizsa contains a strange and strange sample of American painting, from XIX.
Century, not much known in Spain.
The museum has been extended recently: in the new halls we will see the temporary exhibitions and now the restaurant is under an rippled roof, covered by grass, except in Summer, when the museum offers its golf sessions.
We also serve dinner on the terrace. Not far away, in the street Jovellanos, a breathtaking gourmet trio: Casa Manolo to eat croquettes; the Txoko of the Euskal Etzea and Edelweiss, the first German restaurant of Madridm opened since 1939.
Atocha and its environment: entering through the great door
It is not necessary to arrive by train in Madrid to enjoy the iron and crystal architecture of the XIX.
Century of the Atocha train station. You have to visit this station and contemplate the huge space of its tropical forest, with its damp micro climate, unlike the climate from Madrid; we also have the possibility to visit the memorial erected for the victims of the March 11. 2004 attack, a glass and cylinder-shaped sculpture.
Near the station we will discover the Anthropology Museum, one of the unrecognized museums, or the picturesque Cuesta de Moyano, that offers the opportunity to have a quite walk among old and new books, contemplating the lamps of the artist Alvaro Siza (from Monday to Friday, 9.00-14.00 and 17.00-20.00. Week-end, 9.00-14.00).
You can also visit the Botanical Garden (plaza de Murillo, 2. https://www.rjb.csic.es. 914 203 017.
Open everyday. Winter, 10.00-18.00; Summer , 10.00-21.00; 2 euros), with its vegetative species and also a collection of bonsais offered by the ex persident Felipe Gonzalez.
The Gran Via: the Broadway of Madrid
You have to go all over the street, more than once and at different moments of the day to immerse oneself in all its variants. The picture of the crossraods of Gran Via and Alcala by Antonio Lopez, totally empty is very rare.
If you want to see the Gran Via this way you'll have to wake up very early a Sunday morning.
In the Callao square, you will discover the Carrion building with the Schweppes neon, showing in a crucial scene of the movie "Día de la Bestia".
This avenue is made of buildings of the XX. Century.
It is the Broadway of Madrid with its mythical auditorium.
We also have the possibility to drink a good cocktail at the Museo del Chicote, numer 12, with its very 50. interior, full of pictures of Ava Gardner and other illustrious guests.
El Rastro: bargains, tradition and tapas
On Sundays and public holidays, from nine in the morning to three o'clock, takes place this exciting itinerant market, in one of the most typical area of Madrid. You will find a bit of everything there: car seats on the Campillo del Mundo Nuevo square, chairs from the thirties in the glamorous L.A. Studio (Arganzuela, 20), but also baby-foot and pin ball in Dreams (Arganzuela, 25).
We can consider the Rastro like a real store, organised by sections.
If you are a mountains lover you will find all you need in the Ribera de Curtidores.
Coming up to the numer 29 you will find 70 antique dealers.
For those looking for indie clothing or fancy jewellery have a walk trhough the Cascorro square, the central axis of the market.
And don't forget to drink a "vermouth" it is a typical stop on Sunday. The bar Los Caracoles is a good choice.
